They DO exist.

I went on a hike. With a guy. It was my first "date" in over 6 months.

Yeah. I said it. 6 months. That self-imposed dating furlough wasn't the most fun thing in the world, but it really opened up my heart and helped me to see what I really want more clearly, instead of just taking what was offered and feeling miserable. It was, however, the most peaceful time I've experienced in the last 4 years.

He struck up a conversation with me, and we laughed for hours. The more I learned about him, the more I respected him. It was a totally different experience than I'd had with getting to know other men. THIS is what we are looking for - someone we can trust and admire. THIS is the key to dating, I think!

So, after making plans and having to promise him a pie if he showed me his secret huckleberry picking location - Sunday finally arrived. Excitement would be an understatement to how I felt... though, as Bryn has told me.... I "played it cool like Fonzy." It took all the strength I had to not giggle like a 12 year old.

Conversation was fun and we had a great banter going, and he was helpful and knowledgeable, though he DID make me carry the huckleberries. Big mistake. First - a guy is supposed to do the 'heavy lifting', and second, I'm the biggest klutz on earth, and managed to spill half the contents of our bucket when walking back to the truck. In his defense, I think he felt they'd be safer with me, since he'd been eating most of his while we picked.

We got stuck in a freak snowstorm on the side of the mountain (YES... it is only September 5th at the time), and found the mountain lake by mistake, and had dinner at the coolest little smokehouse in Wallace and just enjoyed each other's company. He was the perfect gentleman - something I hadn't experienced in quite a while!!!

If this date only taught me one thing.... it's that GOOD GUYS STILL DO EXIST. I thought they were ALL gone. I was pleasantly surprised to find one alive and well in a remote region of Idaho.

For those of you who are lowering your standards just to have 'someone' in your life... I can tell you - waiting it out for someone you respect is worth it - even if it is only for one date!
